Occasionally they would have something to say while I was doing things, but I like it more when companion NPCs get involved in the narrative instead of just being buddies with side quests now and then. The Companion NPCs were a lot of fun, but I felt like I was going through the motions of just moving their narratives along rather than them being real characters in the world. The dialogue is great and the choices you have to make are difficult, but I found myself not really caring about the NPCs in the world for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. I made choices with consequences, but for some reason they felt a little flat in the end. The Outer Worlds really gives you a lot of room for playing who you want to be, but I never really felt like I got to have a lot of impact. I felt like I had more room to be who I wanted in a Saints Row game where they explicitly tell you 'you're the boss and this is who you are.' It feels very much like they wanted you to be 'this character' in all but name. Then you add on to the fact that the dialogue tree got dumbed down to every response you have being essentially 'Yes', 'No', 'Huh', and 'Joke.' Your stats don't really matter and there's a lot less room to add flavor to your character personality. It was hard for me to mentally separate and justify having fun goofing around in the wasteland with a motivation that strong. 'Hello NPC, I'm looking for information about who stole my baby.' 'Ok, well first I have this 10 step quest I want you to do before I give you any info.' Like, fuck all of that if my character's motivation is my missing baby. It was hard for me to wrap my head around any side quests when my baby is kidnapped.

Were married in what appears to be a heterosexual relationship (could be bi/pan but that's up to you at least)ДЄny one of these says a LOT to me about who my character is.

Find out what happened if you want I guess? In Fallout 4 the setup going in is you. In Fallout: New Vegas, you were a courier that was shot and left for dead. In Fallout 3, You grew up in a vault and your dad is gone. Part of why I liked these kinds of games is the ability to be who I wanted and create my own identity around the bare-bones narrative. Outer Worlds is a whole lot less janky than Fallout 4 is, and of course it has the better writing.ДЇallout 4 is more restricting than I was comfortable with in my RPG. It's not one large map, it's divided into many smaller maps, however they are pretty good maps other than the negative space issue.

In Outer Worlds there is little empty space between points of interest where it felt kind of jarring leaving a town to immediately be in a hideout of bandits. One thing Fallout 4 does better than Outer Worlds though is negative space.

I think it's limb-targeting system (slow motion) is better than Fallout 4's (VATS). An example is getting a flaw where your character is afraid of robots, but if you accept a flaw, you get a perk later, so you have to decide if for how you built your character, the flaw is worth accepting. One of my favorites is the flaw system, where sometimes you get a notification to accept a flaw to your character. There's tons of systems for role-playing in Outer Worlds. Outer Worlds is actually an RPG that plays like a shooter (think something more like Deus Ex, VTMB, or New Vegas). I mean within the first 30 minutes you put on a set of power armor, grab a minigun and gun down a Deathclaw, regardless of if you have a high STR character to support that normally. Fallout 4 rarely locks you out of anything based on what your character is and isn't capable of. It's also part of the Fallout franchise, and if seeing familiar things of Fallout, it taking place in the ruined USA and all means a lot to you, then that may be the answer. It's an okay game in it's own right but it's not what it claims to be. I'd say Outer Worlds, but it really depends on what type of game you want.ДЇallout 4 is more of an open world shooter that masquerades as an RPG, but it's extremely light on the role-playing elements. I don't know if I'd say Fallout 4 has better gunplay, but it is passable and much better than 3 or New Vegas.
